Clean and dry 12 oz. and 30 oz. coffee cans, each with a tight-fitting plastic lid

In a large bowl, mix together milk, whipping cream, sugar, vanilla and salt. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add fruit, nuts or candy bar pieces. Pour the mixture into the 12-ounce coffee can. Snap the lid on tightly. Place inside 30-ounce coffee can, and pack crushed ice around it. Sprinkle rock salt over the ice. Snap the lid on tightly.
Roll the can back and forth for about 15 minutes. Remove the lid. Drain the water. Remove the lid on the 12-ounce coffee can. Stir the thickening ice cream mixture. Replace the lid. Pack with more ice and salt. Replace the lid. Roll the can for 10 more minutes.
