| Traveling to Another Country | ||
by Victoria Fraser, MD, infectious diseases When you're traveling to another country -- whether for business or pleasure -- be sure you discuss your travel plan fully with your physician. Of course, you need to know what vaccinations you'll need, but there are other considerations, as well.Consider the region you're visiting, not just the country. For instance, precautions unnecessary in an urban environment might be mandatory in a rural, countryside or small town environment. Consider your profession, if you'll be working during your travels. For instance, a veterinarian or health care professional would incur different risks. Consider the length of your trip. The longer the trip, the greater potential exposure you have to communicable diseases. Consider the time of the year. Some diseases are more prevalent during specific seasons. Talk with your physician early enough to schedule the appropriate vaccinations or prophylactic medicines. Be sure to allow for several rounds of injections, if needed; and allow enough time to recover from any side-effects from vaccines. The hepatitis A vaccine has shown to be safe and effective. If you are traveling to malaria endemic countries, remember to take malaria prophylaxis. Be sure to carry certificates with you that prove you have been vaccinated. On the lighter side, old-fashioned preparation can go a long way. Bug spray, mosquito netting and other supplies and equipment, depending upon your destination, are good protection and will help ensure you have a safe and pleasurable trip. To avoid food-borne and water-borne illnesses in developing countries, avoid uncooked food and food without a thick peel, and drink bottled water. You'll want to find out about specialized travel clinics (conducted in major cities) prepared specifically to give you expert advice, medications and vaccinations to make your next trip safe!
